A walk-in freezer holds a lot of value in one place. If it starts warming up, you don’t get long before that stock is a problem. LJ Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning designs, builds, repairs and services walk-in freezers and freezer rooms for businesses across Adelaide and surrounds, covering both the panel room and the refrigeration that runs it.
Local, licensed technicians based in Angle Vale. Proper fault-finding, clear quotes, and we turn up when we say we will.

Freezer rooms vs cool rooms
Both are insulated walk-in rooms with a refrigeration system — the difference is the job they do.
- Cool rooms keep product chilled, typically a few degrees above freezing. Good for produce, dairy, drinks and prepared food. See cool rooms Adelaide.
- Freezer rooms keep product frozen solid, commonly around -18°C or colder. Good for frozen stock, bulk meat, ice cream and anything you need to hold long-term.
Running well below zero puts different demands on the room and the system. Freezer rooms need heavier insulation, a well-sealed door (often with a heated frame so it doesn’t freeze shut), a properly working defrost system, and refrigeration sized to pull down and hold low temperatures — even on a 40-degree Adelaide day.
Walk-in freezer builds, installation and replacement
Whether it’s a complete new freezer room built for a fit-out or replacing refrigeration on an old room that can’t keep up, we look at:
- What you’re storing and how much
- How often the door is opened and how warm deliveries are when they go in
- Room size, panel condition and insulation
- Where the condensing unit can go — airflow, access, noise
- Power and drainage
- Whether you need a cool room and freezer room together
We then design, supply and install the freezer room and its refrigeration (or just the refrigeration, if the existing room is sound), commission it, check it pulls down and holds temperature, and walk you through how it runs.
Common walk-in freezer faults
These are the problems we see most often:
- Not holding temperature — the room creeps up during the day or after deliveries
- Ice build-up on the evaporator coil, ceiling or around the door
- Door seal and heater problems — worn gaskets, doors that don’t close fully, or frames freezing shut
- Defrost faults — heaters, timers or controllers failing so the coil ices over
- System running constantly — often dirty condensers, low refrigerant or a failing component
- Water or ice on the floor — blocked or frozen drain lines
- Noisy fans or compressor
Ice build-up is a big one with freezers. It’s usually a symptom — of a door that’s letting warm air in, a defrost problem or a drain issue — so we look for the cause rather than just melting it off.

- Testing defrost heaters, timers and controller settings
- Checking door seals, door heaters and closers
- Clearing and checking drain lines and drain heaters
- Checking fans, motors and electrical connections
- A short report on condition and anything that needs attention

Frequently asked questions
What temperature should a walk-in freezer run at?
Freezer rooms for frozen food storage commonly run at around -18°C or colder. The right setting depends on your product, and you should follow your own food safety plan. We’ll set up and check the controller to suit.
Why is there ice building up in my freezer room?
Usually because warm, moist air is getting in or the defrost isn’t working properly. Common causes are worn door seals, a door not closing fully, defrost heater or controller faults, or a blocked drain. We’ll find the cause rather than just clearing the ice.
Can you repair a walk-in freezer someone else installed?
Yes. We repair and service existing freezer rooms across Adelaide and surrounds, regardless of who installed them.
How do I get a quote for a new freezer room?
Call 1300 553 744 or email info@ljrefrig.com.au. We’ll ask what you’re storing, the size and the location, and usually arrange a site visit. New freezer room builds come with a free, no-obligation quote.
Is it worth repairing an old freezer room or replacing it?
It depends on the condition of the panels, the age of the refrigeration and how often it’s breaking down. Sometimes a repair is the right call; sometimes the refrigeration should be replaced while the room stays; and sometimes it makes more sense to build a new freezer room. We’ll give you an honest opinion and a price for both if it’s close.
